German A1 · Dative Case & Prepositions

Wechselpräpositionen (Einführung) – A1 German Grammar

Two-way prepositions (introduction)

Two-way prepositions (in, an, auf, unter, über …) can take accusative or dative. The question decides:

QuestionCaseExample
wohin? (movement)accusativeIch gehe in die Küche.
wo? (location)dativeIch bin in der Küche.

Example: Wohin? Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. · Wo? Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.

The two-way prepositions

in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen – all can take accusative or dative.

Rule of thumb

  • Movement from A to B → wohin? → accusative
  • Position / no change of place → wo? → dative

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Ich bin in die Küche (when you are there) → ✅ Ich bin in der Küche (where? dative).
  • ❌ Ich gehe in der Küche (movement) → ✅ Ich gehe in die Küche (where to? accusative).

Ich bin in ___ Küche. (wo? Dativ)
