Ja/Nein-Fragen – A1 German Grammar

Yes/no questions

In yes/no questions the verb comes first. You answer with "Ja" (yes) or "Nein" (no).

Example: Hast du Geschwister? – Ja, ich habe eine Schwester. / Nein, ich habe keine Geschwister. (Do you have siblings? – Yes, I have a sister. / No, I don't have siblings.)

Answering with "doch"

To a negative question you answer with doch (instead of "ja") when you contradict it:

Hast du keine Zeit? – Doch, ich habe Zeit! (Don't you have time? – Yes I do!)

W-question vs. yes/no question

• Yes/no question: verb first → Wohnst du hier?
• W-question: question word first → Wo wohnst du?

Common mistakes

• ❌ Du hast Geschwister? (intonation only) → better: Hast du Geschwister? (verb first).
