Sentence structure with modal verbs
In the sentence, the modal verb and the infinitive form a bracket: the modal verb is in position 2, the infinitive goes right at the end.

Example: Ich möchte heute Abend ins Kino gehen. (I'd like to go to the cinema tonight.)
Questions with modal verbs
- Yes/no question: Kannst du mir helfen? (Can you help me?)
- W-question: Wann kannst du kommen? (When can you come?)
Negation
"nicht"/"kein" goes before the infinitive at the end: Ich kann heute nicht kommen. · Ich möchte keinen Kaffee trinken.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Ich möchte gehen ins Kino → ✅ Ich möchte ins Kino gehen (infinitive to the end).
- ❌ Ich kann sprechen gut Deutsch → ✅ Ich kann gut Deutsch sprechen.
