Trennbare Verben (Einführung) – A1 German Grammar
Separable verbs (introduction)
Many verbs have a separable prefix. In the present tense the prefix splits off and moves to the end of the sentence. The stem is conjugated as normal.
| Infinitive | Prefix | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| aufstehen (get up) | auf | Ich stehe früh auf. |
| ankommen (arrive) | an | Der Zug kommt spät an. |
Example: "aufstehen" → Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. (I get up at seven o'clock.)
Common separable prefixes
auf-, an-, ein-, aus-, mit-, ab-, zu-, vor-, fern-: aufstehen, ankommen, einkaufen, ausgehen, mitkommen, abfahren.
Separable or not?
- Separable (stressed prefix): aufstehen → ich stehe auf.
- Inseparable (unstressed prefix: be-, ver-, er-, ent-): verstehen → ich verstehe (stays together).
Common mistakes
- ❌ Ich aufstehe um sieben. → ✅ Ich stehe um sieben auf.
- ❌ Ich stehe auf früh. → ✅ Ich stehe früh auf (prefix right at the end).
