German A2 · Past Tense

Perfekt mit 'haben' – A2 German Grammar

The Perfekt with "haben"

The Perfekt is the most important past tense in spoken German. Most verbs form it with the auxiliary "haben" (conjugated in position 2) and the past participle (Partizip II) at the end of the sentence.

PronounhabenPartizip II
ichhabegegessen
duhastgemacht
er/sie/eshatgekauft
wirhabengespielt
ihrhabtgetrunken
sie/Siehabengearbeitet

Regular verbs form the participle with ge- + stem + -t: machen → gemacht (made). Irregular verbs often end in -en: essen → gegessen (eaten).

Example: Ich habe gestern Pizza gegessen. (I ate pizza yesterday.)

Ich ___ gestern Pizza gegessen.
