Wortstellung: Nebensatz zuerst
Word order: subordinate clause first
The subordinate clause can also come first. Then the whole subordinate clause counts as position 1, and the main clause starts immediately with the conjugated verb (position 2). This puts two verbs right next to each other – "verb, verb" around the comma.
| Position 1 (subordinate clause) | Position 2 (verb) | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Wenn es regnet, | bleibe | ich zu Hause. |
| Wenn ich Zeit habe, | gehe | ich schwimmen. |
Example: Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. (If it rains, I stay home.)
