Präteritum of modal verbs
In the past, modal verbs are almost always used in the Präteritum (not the Perfekt). Important: the umlaut drops, and you add -te to the stem.

Example: Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen, weil ich arbeiten musste. (I couldn't come yesterday because I had to work.)
Ich ___ gestern nicht kommen. (können, Präteritum)
