Wechselpräpositionen: Wohin? = Akkusativ
Two-way prepositions with "Wohin?" (accusative)
When you ask "Wohin?" (where to?) – that is, about a direction with movement – the two-way prepositions take the accusative. The verb often signals the movement: legen, stellen, setzen, hängen.
The article in the accusative:
| Gender | Nominative | Accusative |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | der Tisch | den Tisch |
| neuter | das Bett | das Bett |
| feminine | die Wand | die Wand |
| plural | die Regale | die Regale |
Only the masculine article changes (der → den).
Examples: Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. (I put the book onto the table.) · Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. (I hang the picture onto the wall.)
Ich lege das Buch auf ___ Tisch. (Akkusativ, maskulin)
