German A2 · "wenn" Clauses

'wenn' vs. 'wann' – A2 German Grammar

"wenn" or "wann"?

These two words sound similar but have different jobs:

WordFunctionExample
wannquestion word (time)Wann kommst du? (When are you coming?)
wannindirect questionIch weiß nicht, wann er kommt. (I don't know when he's coming.)
wennconjunction (time/condition)Wenn er kommt, freue ich mich. (When/if he comes, I'll be happy.)

Tip: if you can ask "at what time?", you need "wann". If it means "whenever / if", use "wenn".

Example: Wann kommst du? · Wenn er kommt, freue ich mich.

___ kommst du morgen?
