German B1 · Passive Voice (Present & Simple Past)

Wiederholung: Passiv – B1 German Grammar

Review: passive

All passive forms share the same core: a form of "werden" + past participle. Only "werden" changes according to tense or modal verb – the past participle always stays the same and stands at the end.

FormStructureExample
Presentwird + past participlewird gebaut
Simple pastwurde + past participlewurde gebaut
Perfektist + past participle + wordenist gebaut worden
With modalmodal + past participle + werdenmuss gebaut werden

Note:

  • Active → passive: the accusative object becomes the subject.
  • The doer is often left out (only with von/durch when needed).
  • "sein" + past participle is usually the state passive (Die Tür ist geschlossen = result).

Examples:

  • Das Haus wurde gebaut und muss jetzt renoviert werden. (…was built and now must be renovated.)
  • Der Brief wird geschrieben und morgen verschickt. (…is written and sent tomorrow.)
  • Die Tickets können online gekauft werden. (The tickets can be bought online.)
