Subordinate clauses with "weil"
"weil" (because) introduces a subordinate clause and answers the question "Why?". A subordinate clause cannot stand alone – it needs a main clause.
The key difference from a main clause: the conjugated verb moves to the very end. With separable verbs, the parts rejoin at the end (e.g. ich rufe an → …, weil ich anrufe).
| Main clause | Clause with "weil" |
|---|---|
| Ich bleibe zu Hause, | weil ich krank bin. (because I am sick) |
| Er lernt viel, | weil er eine Prüfung hat. (because he has an exam) |
| Sie ist müde, | weil sie schlecht geschlafen hat. (because she slept badly) |
Note:
- There is always a comma before "weil".
- The conjugated verb stands at the very end.
- In the Perfekt, the auxiliary (hat/ist) comes after the participle: …, weil er gekommen ist.
Examples:
- Ich nehme den Schirm, weil es regnet. (I take the umbrella because it's raining.)
- Wir kommen später, weil der Zug Verspätung hat. (We're coming later because the train is delayed.)
- Er isst nichts, weil er keinen Hunger hat. (He isn't eating because he isn't hungry.)
