Subordinate clauses with "dass"
"dass" (that) packs a statement, opinion or fact into a subordinate clause. It often follows verbs of saying and thinking such as glauben/believe, denken/think, sagen/say, wissen/know, hoffen/hope, finden/think.
As with "weil", the conjugated verb goes to the end. You can often compare a "dass"-clause with a simple statement: "Er hat Recht." → Ich glaube, dass er Recht hat.
| Main clause | Clause with "dass" |
|---|---|
| Ich glaube, | dass er Recht hat. (that he is right) |
| Sie weiß, | dass ich morgen komme. (that I'm coming tomorrow) |
| Es ist gut, | dass du gekommen bist. (that you came) |
Note:
- There is a comma before "dass".
- The conjunction "dass" is written with double s, unlike the article "das".
- The verb goes to the end of the clause.
