"nachdem" (Vorzeitigkeit) – Wiederholung

"nachdem" (anteriority) – review

"nachdem" (after) links two actions and shows: one happens before the other. Typical is the tense shift – the "nachdem"-clause is one step earlier.

Main clause tensenachdem-clause (earlier)
Präteritum / Perfektpast perfect
presentPerfekt

Structure: Nachdem wir gegessen hatten (past perfect), räumten wir auf (Präteritum).

Note:

  • "nachdem" → verb at the end (subordinate clause).
  • Two time steps: earlier = past perfect/Perfekt, later = Präteritum/present.
  • Opposite: "bevor" (the second action mentioned first).

Examples:

  • Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, räumten wir auf. (After we had eaten, we cleaned up.)
  • Nachdem ich geduscht habe, frühstücke ich. (present/Perfekt – After I've showered, I have breakfast.)
  • Er ging nach Hause, nachdem die Party zu Ende war. (He went home after the party had ended.)
