"außerdem" und "allerdings"
"außerdem" and "allerdings"
Two more adverbial connectors with opposite functions. Both like to stand in position 1 (verb follows directly):
- "außerdem" (furthermore) adds another argument – usually in the same direction (often positive + positive).
- "allerdings" (however) restricts the previous statement or adds a small objection.
| Connector | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| außerdem | addition (+) | Sie ist schön. Außerdem ist sie günstig. |
| allerdings | restriction (–) | Sie ist schön, allerdings ist sie weit weg. |
Note:
- "außerdem" = one more point on top.
- "allerdings" = but, an objection (softer than "aber").
- Both are adverbs → verb in position 2.
Examples:
- Das Hotel ist zentral. Außerdem ist das Frühstück inklusive. (The hotel is central. Also, breakfast is included.)
- Das Handy ist gut, allerdings ist der Akku schwach. (The phone is good, however the battery is weak.)
- Ich komme gern. Allerdings habe ich nur wenig Zeit. (I'll gladly come. However, I have little time.)
Die Wohnung ist schön. ___ ist sie günstig.
