Übung: Konnektoren

Practice: connectors

All four are adverbial connectors: in position 1 the verb (position 2) follows, then the subject. They differ only in meaning.

ConnectorMeaningRelated to
trotzdemcontrast (nevertheless)obwohl (clause)
deshalbconsequence (therefore)weil (clause)
außerdemaddition (furthermore)und
allerdingsrestriction (however)aber

Note:

  • Adverbial connector → verb in position 2 (never at the end).
  • Each has a subordinate-clause "partner" (trotzdem↔obwohl, deshalb↔weil).
  • They can also go inside the sentence: Er ist trotzdem gekommen.

Examples:

  • Er hat viel Geld, allerdings ist er nicht glücklich. (He has a lot of money, however he isn't happy.)
  • Es war kalt, trotzdem sind wir schwimmen gegangen. (It was cold; nevertheless we went swimming.)
  • Ich bin müde, deshalb gehe ich früh ins Bett. (I'm tired, so I go to bed early.)

Er hat viel Geld, ___ ist er nicht glücklich. (allerdings)
