Verb-noun collocations (2)
Many verb-noun collocations contain a fixed preposition + noun + verb (e.g. zur Verfügung stehen, in Kontakt stehen). These are especially important in emails and at work. Again: learn the whole phrase as a unit.
| Collocation | simple verb |
|---|---|
| Kritik üben (an + dative) | kritisieren (to criticize) |
| in Kontakt stehen (mit + dative) | kontaktieren (to be in contact) |
| zur Verfügung stehen | verfügbar sein (to be available) |
| in Frage kommen | möglich sein (to be possible) |
Note:
- Often with a fixed preposition: Kritik üben an, in Kontakt bleiben mit.
- "stehen" (state) vs. "stellen" (action): zur Verfügung stehen vs. zur Verfügung stellen.
- Very useful for formal emails.
Examples:
- Das Team steht Ihnen zur Verfügung. (The team is at your disposal.)
- Wir stehen in Kontakt mit dem Kunden. (We are in contact with the customer.)
- Der Chef übt Kritik an dem Plan. (The boss criticises the plan.)
Kritik ___ = kritisieren.
