Konjunktiv II mit 'würde' + Infinitiv
Konjunktiv II with "würde" + infinitive
The Konjunktiv II expresses what is not real: wishes, dreams, polite requests and hypothetical situations (What if…?). The easiest and most common form is "würde" + infinitive.
"würde" is conjugated like a normal verb and stands in position 2; the infinitive moves to the end. For most verbs, "würde + infinitive" sounds more natural than the older Konjunktiv II form.
| Person | "würde" | infinitive (end) |
|---|---|---|
| ich | würde | reisen |
| du | würdest | reisen |
| er/sie/es | würde | reisen |
| wir/sie/Sie | würden | reisen |
| ihr | würdet | reisen |
Note:
- "würde" ≠ "wurde" (Präteritum of werden). Mind the umlaut ü.
- With sein, haben and modal verbs, use their own forms (wäre, hätte, könnte).
- Adding "gern" makes a wish especially polite.
Examples:
- Ich würde gern nach Italien reisen. (wish – I'd like to travel to Italy.)
- Würdest du mir bitte helfen? (polite request – Would you please help me?)
- An deiner Stelle würde ich das nicht machen. (advice – In your place I wouldn't do that.)
Ich ___ gern ins Kino gehen.
