Passiv mit Modalverben

Passive with modal verbs

Often you want to say that something must, can, should be done. Then you combine a modal verb with the passive. Structure: modal verb (conjugated, position 2) … + past participle + "werden" (infinitive) at the very end.

So there are two verbs at the end: first the past participle, then the infinitive "werden". This combination is called the "passive infinitive" (repariert werden).

ActivePassive with modal
Man muss das Auto reparieren.Das Auto muss repariert werden. (must be repaired)
Man kann das Problem lösen.Das Problem kann gelöst werden. (can be solved)
Man darf hier nicht rauchen.Hier darf nicht geraucht werden.

Note:

  • Order at the end: past participle + werden (not the other way round).
  • The modal verb carries the tense: muss (present) → musste (past).
  • Here "werden" is in the infinitive, not conjugated.

Examples:

  • Die Aufgabe kann heute nicht gelöst werden. (The task can't be solved today.)
  • Das Formular muss unterschrieben werden. (The form must be signed.)
  • Der Termin sollte verschoben werden. (The appointment should be postponed.)

Das Auto muss repariert ___.
