Übung: Adjektivdeklination

Practice: adjective declension

How to proceed: 1) definite article? → mostly -e/-en, 2) dative? → always -en, 3) no article? → the adjective shows the gender (-er/-e/-es).

Casemasc.fem.neut.plural
Nominative-e-e-e-en
Accusative-en-e-e-en
Dative-en-en-en-en
no article (nom.)-er-e-es-e

Note:

  • Memory aid: only masculine accusative is "different" (-en) in nom./acc.
  • Dative = always -en.
  • Without an article the article ending "jumps" onto the adjective.

Examples:

  • Der freundliche Mann gibt dem kleinen Kind frisches Obst. (The friendly man gives the small child fresh fruit.)
  • Ich kaufe einen roten Apfel und frische Milch. (I buy a red apple and fresh milk.)
  • Mit gutem Wein schmeckt das Essen besser. (With good wine the food tastes better.)
