Relative clauses with a preposition (accusative)

Sometimes the verb of the relative clause takes a preposition (verantwortlich sein für, warten auf). Then the preposition stands before the relative pronoun. Important: the pronoun's case is determined by the preposition, not by its role in the main clause.

Das ist das Projekt. Ich bin für das Projekt verantwortlich. → Das ist das Projekt, für das ich verantwortlich bin.

• Order: comma + preposition + relative pronoun, verb at the end.
• First check: which preposition does the verb require? Then choose the case.

Common mistakes

• ❌ Das Projekt, das ich verantwortlich bin. → ✅ Das Projekt, für das ich verantwortlich bin. (don't drop the preposition "für").
• ❌ taking the case from the main clause: der Kollege, für dem → ✅ für den ("für" = accusative).

Examples:

• Das ist der Kollege, auf den ich warte. (That's the colleague I'm waiting for.)
• Das ist das Thema, über das wir sprechen. (That's the topic we're talking about.)
• Das sind die Pläne, für die wir kämpfen. (Those are the plans we're fighting for.)
