Wiederholung: Relativsätze mit Präpositionen
Review: relative clauses with prepositions
The key rules of this unit at a glance:
| Situation | Form |
|---|---|
| preposition + person/thing | prep. + relative pronoun (case from the prep.): …, für den / bei der / mit denen |
| whole sentence / indefinite word | was: …, was mich freute |
| thing + preposition | wo(r)+prep.: …, worüber / womit |
Note:
- The case always comes from the preposition, never from the role in the main clause.
- Dative plural = denen.
- People never with "wo-" (no "womit" for people → "mit dem/der/denen").
Common mistakes
- ❌ wrong case: die Frage, auf der → ✅ die Frage, auf die ("auf" is accusative here → die).
- ❌ using "was" instead of prep. + pronoun for concrete things with verb government: das Auto, was wir fahren → ✅ das Auto, mit dem wir gefahren sind.
Examples:
- Das ist das Auto, mit dem wir gefahren sind. (That's the car we drove in.)
- Das ist die Frage, auf die es keine Antwort gibt. (That's the question there's no answer to.)
- Er hat gewonnen, worüber sich alle freuten. (He won, which pleased everyone.)
