Review: the building blocks of formal language

The big B2 topics interlock in formal texts. Here is what a short report looks like:

Passive: Der Antrag wurde geprüft. (The application was reviewed.) Konjunktiv I: Die Behörde teilte mit, alles sei in Ordnung. Nominal style: Nach der Prüfung folgte die Entscheidung. Relative clause: Das ist der Punkt, auf den es ankommt. Connector: Dementsprechend sind keine weiteren Schritte nötig.

Note – what B2 gives you the tools for:

• Passive / passive substitutes → focus on the action, not the agent.
• Konjunktiv I → report others' statements at a distance.
• Konjunktiv II (past) → the unreal, politeness.
• Nominal style & support verbs → compact, official language.
• Relative clauses & connectors → link sentences, structure a text.

Common mistakes

• ❌ using the indicative in reported speech: Er sagte, die Reform ist notwendig. → ✅ …, die Reform sei notwendig.
• ❌ mixing registers: wildly combining colloquial and formal devices → in reports stay consistently formal.

Examples:

• Er sagte, die Reform sei notwendig. (He said the reform was necessary.)
• Nach Abschluss der Prüfung wurden die Ergebnisse veröffentlicht. (After the review, the results were published.)
• Dementsprechend sind keine weiteren Maßnahmen erforderlich. (Accordingly, no further measures are required.)
