zumal

"zumal" (reinforcing reason)

"zumal" gives an additional, reinforcing reason and means "especially because / all the more since". It introduces a subordinate clause → the verb goes to the end.

Wir bleiben zu Hause, zumal es stark regnet. = We are staying home, all the more so because it is raining.

"weil" vs. "zumal":

Note:

• "zumal" often presupposes an already mentioned reason and strengthens it.
• A comma comes before "zumal", and the verb goes to the end.
• Elevated, argumentative style.

Common mistakes

• ❌ wrong verb position after "zumal" → in a subordinate clause the conjugated verb goes to the very end: …, zumal ich morgen früh aufstehen muss.
• ❌ using "zumal" as the only reason → it usually reinforces an already mentioned reason.

Examples:

• Ich gehe früh ins Bett, zumal ich morgen früh aufstehen muss. (I'm going to bed early, especially since I have to get up early tomorrow.)
• Der Ausflug lohnt sich, zumal das Wetter schön ist. (The trip is worth it, all the more since the weather is nice.)
• Wir sollten sparen, zumal die Preise steigen. (We should save, especially since prices are rising.)
