Demonstrative pronouns as reference words

Demonstrative pronouns (dieser/diese/dieses, and der/die/das used as pronouns) refer back more strongly and clearly than personal pronouns. You use them when a personal pronoun would be ambiguous – they often point to the last-mentioned noun.

Why not always "er/sie/es"?

Der Vater sprach mit dem Sohn. Dieser war noch jung. → "dieser" clearly = the son (the last-mentioned noun).

Note:

• "dieser/diese/dieses" emphasizes and usually refers to the nearer / last-mentioned noun.
• They are declined like der-words.
• Typical of precise, formal texts.

Common mistakes

• ❌ Ich sprach mit der Ärztin. Dieser gab mir Rat. → ✅ …Diese gab mir Rat. (mind the gender: die Ärztin → diese).
• ❌ using "dieser" for people as a mere replacement for "er" → only use it when a personal pronoun would be ambiguous.

Examples:

• Ich traf meinen alten Lehrer. Dieser erkannte mich sofort. (I met my old teacher. He recognized me at once.)
• Ich sprach mit der Ärztin. Diese gab mir gute Ratschläge. (I spoke to the doctor. She gave me good advice.)
• Er kaufte ein Auto und ein Fahrrad. Dieses benutzt er täglich. (He bought a car and a bike. He uses the latter daily.)
