Connectors for linking a text
Connectors join sentences logically and show how statements relate to each other. This turns a series of sentences into a coherent text. What matters is their meaning and the verb position.

Note:
- These connectors are adverbs → at the start of the clause the verb comes in position 2: Außerdem hatte er …
- They make the steps of thought in a text visible.
- Don't use too many at once – use them purposefully.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Außerdem er hatte Kopfschmerzen. → ✅ Außerdem hatte er Kopfschmerzen. (adverb → verb in position 2).
- ❌ wrong meaning: Er war müde. Deshalb war er wach. → "deshalb" shows a consequence; here a contrast ("allerdings/jedoch") fits.
Examples:
- Er war müde. Außerdem hatte er Kopfschmerzen. Deshalb ging er früh ins Bett. (He was tired. Moreover, he had a headache. Therefore he went to bed early.)
- Der Preis ist hoch. Allerdings ist die Qualität sehr gut. (The price is high. However, the quality is very good.)
- Zunächst planen wir, dann handeln wir, schließlich prüfen wir das Ergebnis. (First we plan, then we act, finally we check the result.)
Er war müde. ___ hatte er Kopfschmerzen.
