Reference words: dabei, dazu, damit (pronominal adverbs)

Pronominal adverbs (da- + preposition) refer back to something mentioned (not a person!) and thus replace a preposition + noun/clause. This avoids repetition and links the text.

Rule: For things use da(r)-, for people use preposition + pronoun (mit ihm, not "damit").

Note:

• Before a vowel an -r- is inserted: damit but darauf, daran, darüber.
• They refer back to a whole previously mentioned situation.

Common mistakes

• ❌ for people: Ich rechne damit. (meaning: my friend) → ✅ Ich rechne mit ihm. (people → preposition + pronoun).
• ❌ daauf, daan → ✅ darauf, daran (an -r- is inserted before a vowel).

Examples:

• Sie lernt Deutsch. Dabei hilft ihr eine App. (She's learning German. An app helps her with that.)
• Wir haben ein Problem. Dazu möchte ich etwas sagen. (We have a problem. I'd like to say something about that.)
• Er kaufte Werkzeug und reparierte damit das Fahrrad. (He bought tools and repaired the bike with them.)
