Ellipsis omits a repeated element ("Er kam später, sie [kam] früher" — He came later, she [came] earlier), substitution replaces it with another word ("Ich nehme den roten Wagen; den blauen [Wagen] nicht" — I'll take the red car; not the blue [one]).
