Negation with "nicht"
You use nicht to negate verbs, adjectives or whole sentences. "nicht" usually goes at the end of the sentence or right before the word you negate.

kein or nicht? Negate nouns with an indefinite article using kein, everything else with nicht.
Position of "nicht"
- Whole sentence / verb: "nicht" goes to the end → Ich komme heute nicht.
- Before an adjective/adverb/place: "nicht" goes before it → Das ist nicht teuer. · Er wohnt nicht hier.
- With a definite article: Ich kenne den Mann nicht.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Ich nicht verstehe das → ✅ Ich verstehe das nicht.
- ❌ Ich habe nicht ein Auto → ✅ Ich habe kein Auto.
