Modal verbs: können / müssen

Modal verbs change the meaning of another verb. können = ability, müssen = necessity. They are irregular (the ich- and er-forms are identical).

Example: Ich kann schwimmen. (I can swim.) Du musst arbeiten. (You must work.) The infinitive goes at the end of the sentence.

Negation

  • nicht müssen = not necessary: Du musst nicht kommen. (= you can stay home)
  • nicht dürfen = forbidden: Du darfst nicht rauchen.

Note

  • The ich- and er/sie/es-forms are identical and take no ending: ich kann, er kann.
  • The second verb goes as an infinitive at the end.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Ich kann schwimme → ✅ Ich kann schwimmen (infinitive).
  • ❌ Er kannt → ✅ Er kann.

Ich ___ (können) gut schwimmen.
