Adjektivendungen nach bestimmtem Artikel – A1 German Grammar
Adjective endings after the definite article
After the definite article (der/die/das), the adjective usually takes the ending -e in the nominative. In the plural it ends in -en.
| Gender | Article + adjective + noun | Ending |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | der große Mann | -e |
| feminine | die kleine Frau | -e |
| neuter | das neue Auto | -e |
| plural | die neuen Autos | -en |
Examples: Der große Mann ist mein Vater. (The tall man is my father.) · Das neue Auto ist teuer. (The new car is expensive.) · Die kleinen Kinder spielen. (The small children are playing.)
Because the article already shows the gender, the adjective only needs the simple ending -e (or -en in the plural).
Predicative = no ending
If the adjective comes after the verb (not before the noun), it takes no ending:
Der Mann ist groß. · Das Auto ist neu. · Die Kinder sind klein.
Common mistakes
- ❌ der großer Mann → ✅ der große Mann (after "der" only -e).
- ❌ die kleine Kinder → ✅ die kleinen Kinder (plural: -en).
- ❌ Der Mann ist große → ✅ Der Mann ist groß (predicative: no ending).
