Adjektivendungen nach unbestimmtem Artikel – A1 German Grammar
Adjective endings after the indefinite article
After the indefinite article (ein/eine), the adjective shows the gender. That is why it takes a clearer ending in the nominative: -er (masculine), -e (feminine) or -es (neuter).
| Gender | Article + adjective + noun | Ending |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | ein großer Mann | -er |
| feminine | eine kleine Frau | -e |
| neuter | ein neues Auto | -es |
Examples: Das ist ein großer Mann. (That is a tall man.) · Ich habe ein neues Auto. (I have a new car.) · Da kommt eine kleine Frau. (Here comes a small woman.)
Because "ein" does not show the gender, the adjective takes on that job with -er or -es.
Comparison: der vs. ein
| masculine | neuter | |
|---|---|---|
| der/das | der große Mann | das neue Auto |
| ein | ein großer Mann | ein neues Auto |
Note: the "signal ending" (-er/-es) moves from the article to the adjective when the article doesn't show it.
Common mistakes
- ❌ ein große Mann → ✅ ein großer Mann.
- ❌ ein neue Auto → ✅ ein neues Auto.
- ✅ eine kleine Frau (feminine: -e, same as with the definite article).
