Superlativ – A1 German Grammar

The superlative (Superlativ)

You form the superlative with "am" and the ending -sten. It says what is the most of all.

AdjectiveComparativeSuperlative
schnellschnelleram schnellsten
kleinkleineram kleinsten
großgrößeram größten
gutbesseram besten

Examples: Er läuft am schnellsten. (He runs the fastest.) · Der Elefant ist am größten. (The elephant is the biggest.) · Dieses Buch ist am besten. (This book is the best.)

"gut → am besten" (good → best) is irregular; "groß" keeps the umlaut in the superlative too: am größten.

-esten when the stem ends in -t/-d/-s/-ß

alt → am ältesten, kurz → am kürzesten (extra -e for pronunciation).

More irregular superlatives

  • gut → am besten
  • viel → am meisten
  • gern → am liebsten
  • hoch → am höchsten

Common mistakes

  • ❌ der schnellste vs. am schnellsten: with "am" → am schnellsten (predicative). Before a noun: der schnellste Läufer.
  • ❌ am gutsten → ✅ am besten.
