Komparativ – A1 German Grammar

The comparative (Komparativ)

You usually form the comparative with -er. When comparing, you use the word "als" (than). Many short adjectives also add an umlaut.

AdjectiveComparative
schnellschneller
kleinkleiner
großgrößer
altälter
gutbesser

Examples: Mein Auto ist schneller als deins. (My car is faster than yours.) · Anna ist größer als Tom. (Anna is taller than Tom.) · Heute ist es besser als gestern. (Today it is better than yesterday.)

"gut → besser" (good → better) is irregular; "groß" and "alt" add an umlaut (ö, ä).

Equality: "so … wie"

For things that are equal, use so … wie (as … as): Tom ist so groß wie Anna. (not "als").

More irregular forms

  • viel → mehr (more)
  • gern → lieber (rather/prefer)
  • hoch → höher (higher)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ schneller wie → ✅ schneller als (comparison with a difference uses "als").
  • ❌ mehr groß → ✅ größer (comparative with -er, not with "mehr").
  • ❌ gooder/gutter → ✅ besser.

Komparativ von "gut"?
