Plural – A1 German Grammar
The plural
German nouns form the plural in different ways. In the plural the article is always die.

| -(e)n | die Frau | die Frauen |
| -s | das Auto | die Autos |
Example: Die Kinder spielen. (The children play.) Die Tische sind neu. (The tables are new.)
It is best to learn the plural together with the noun.
Umlaut in the plural
Many nouns take an umlaut in the plural (a→ä, o→ö, u→ü): der Mann → die Männer, das Buch → die Bücher, die Mutter → die Mütter.
Common mistakes
- ❌ die Kinds → ✅ die Kinder.
- ❌ die Fraus → ✅ die Frauen.
- ❌ der Tische (plural) → ✅ die Tische (the plural article is always "die").
