The indefinite article (ein/eine)
The indefinite article ("a/an") is ein for masculine and neuter nouns and eine for feminine nouns:

Example: Das ist ein Buch. (That is a book.) Das ist eine Lampe. (That is a lamp.)
Use the indefinite article when something is new or unknown.
definite vs. indefinite
- ein/eine = something new, mentioned for the first time: Da ist ein Hund. (There is a dog.)
- der/die/das = something already known: Der Hund ist süß. (The dog is cute.)
No plural for "ein"
"ein/eine" exists only in the singular. In the plural there is no article: Das sind eine Bücher.
Common mistakes
- ❌ eine Buch → ✅ ein Buch (neuter).
- ❌ ein Frau → ✅ eine Frau (feminine).
