The dative: articles

The dative is often the "receiver" of an action. All articles change (in the plural the noun also gets an extra -n).

Example: Ich helfe dem Mann, der Frau und den Kindern. (I help the man, the woman and the children.)

Dative verbs

Some verbs require the dative: helfen, danken, gehören, gefallen, antworten, glauben.

Ich helfe dem Mann. · Das Buch gehört der Frau. · Das Auto gefällt dem Kind.

Asking for the dative

Ask with Wem? (to whom): Ich helfe dem Mann. → Wem helfe ich? – Dem Mann.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Ich helfe den Mann → ✅ Ich helfe dem Mann (dative, not accusative).
  • ❌ mit den Kinder → ✅ mit den Kindern (plural + -n).
