"Ich hätte gern" / Mengenangaben – A1 German Grammar
"Ich hätte gern" and quantities
When shopping you order politely with "Ich hätte gern …" (I'd like …). For amounts you use these words:
| Amount | Example |
|---|---|
| ein Kilo | ein Kilo Äpfel (a kilo of apples) |
| ein Liter | ein Liter Milch (a liter of milk) |
| ein Stück | ein Stück Käse (a piece of cheese) |
| eine Flasche | eine Flasche Wasser (a bottle of water) |
Example: Ich hätte gern ein Kilo Äpfel und einen Liter Milch, bitte. (I'd like a kilo of apples and a liter of milk, please.)
More quantities
| Amount | Example |
|---|---|
| eine Dose | eine Dose Tomaten (a can of tomatoes) |
| eine Packung | eine Packung Reis (a packet of rice) |
| ein Gramm / 100 Gramm | 100 Gramm Käse |
| eine Tafel | eine Tafel Schokolade (a bar of chocolate) |
Note: After a quantity, the food comes without an article: ein Kilo Äpfel (not ein Kilo die Äpfel).
Common mistakes
- ❌ ein Kilo von Äpfeln → ✅ ein Kilo Äpfel.
- ❌ "Ich hätte gern" without "bitte" sounds less polite → better with bitte.
