At the restaurant

A typical restaurant conversation goes like this:

Example: "Ich hätte gern die Suppe und ein Wasser." – "Die Rechnung, bitte."

Useful sentences

  • Ich nehme … (I'll have …) / Für mich bitte … (For me, please …)
  • Zusammen oder getrennt? (together or separately? when paying)
  • Guten Appetit! (before eating) · Prost! (cheers!)

The menu

die Vorspeise (starter), das Hauptgericht (main course), die Nachspeise/der Nachtisch (dessert), die Getränke (drinks).

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Ich will die Suppe (impolite) → better: Ich hätte gern / Ich möchte die Suppe.
  • ❌ Rechnung bitte without the article → better: Die Rechnung, bitte.
