Verb 'sein' im Präsens – A1 German Grammar

The verb "sein" (to be)

"sein" is irregular and one of the most important German verbs. Here are its present-tense forms:

Examples: Ich bin Anna. (I am Anna.) · Wir sind müde. (We are tired.)

Use "sein" to introduce yourself and describe states: Ich bin Lehrer. (I am a teacher.)

Negation

Use nicht to negate: Ich bin nicht müde. (I'm not tired.) · Das ist nicht richtig. (That's not right.)

Questions

  • Yes/no question: verb first → Bist du müde? · Ist er Lehrer?
  • W-question: question word + verb → Wer bist du? (Who are you?) · Wie alt bist du? (How old are you?)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Ich bist → ✅ Ich bin.
  • ❌ Du bin → ✅ Du bist.
  • ❌ Wir ist → ✅ Wir sind.
