Imperativ (ihr/Sie) – A1 German Grammar
The imperative (ihr/Sie)
For "ihr" (plural you), take the ihr form of the verb without the pronoun: "Kommt!" For the polite "Sie" form, keep the pronoun, but place it after the verb: "Kommen Sie!"
| Verb | du | ihr | Sie |
|---|---|---|---|
| kommen | Komm! | Kommt! | Kommen Sie! |
| gehen | Geh! | Geht! | Gehen Sie! |
| nehmen | Nimm! | Nehmt! | Nehmen Sie! |
Examples: Kommt herein! (Come in!) · Nehmen Sie bitte Platz! (Please have a seat!) · Geht nach Hause! (Go home!)
Use the Sie form with strangers, and the ihr form with several friends.
"sein" as an exception
- du: Sei · ihr: Seid · Sie: Seien Sie
Separable verbs
The prefix stays at the end: Steh bitte auf! · Machen Sie die Tür zu!
Common mistakes
- ❌ Kommen Sie! without "Sie" → the Sie form always needs the pronoun.
- ❌ Ihr kommt! as a command → ✅ Kommt! (without "ihr").
