Wegbeschreibung – A1 German Grammar
Giving directions (Wegbeschreibung)
To describe the way, you often use the imperative (usually the Sie form) together with direction words. This is how you tell someone how to get somewhere.
| German | Meaning |
|---|---|
| geradeaus | straight ahead |
| links | left |
| rechts | right |
| an der Ampel | at the traffic light |
| die erste Straße | the first street |
Examples: Gehen Sie geradeaus. (Go straight ahead.) · Biegen Sie an der Ampel links ab. (Turn left at the traffic light.) · Nehmen Sie die erste Straße rechts. (Take the first street on the right.)
Der Bahnhof ist dann auf der linken Seite. (The station is then on the left-hand side.)

Asking for the way
Entschuldigung, wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? (Excuse me, how do I get to the station?) · Wo ist die Post?
Common mistakes
- ❌ Gehen Sie rechts ab an der Ampel (word order) → better: Biegen Sie an der Ampel rechts ab.
- ❌ nach links always needed? → often just links/rechts is enough: Biegen Sie links ab.
