Uhrzeit – A1 German Grammar
Telling the time
You ask the time with "Wie spät ist es?" or "Wie viel Uhr ist es?" (What time is it?). The answer starts with "Es ist …".
| Time | German |
|---|---|
| 3:00 | Es ist drei Uhr. |
| 3:15 | Es ist Viertel nach drei. |
| 3:30 | Es ist halb vier. |
| 3:45 | Es ist Viertel vor vier. |
Watch out: "halb vier" means 3:30 – i.e. half an hour before four, not after three.
Official time (24-hour)
On timetables/radio: Es ist 14:30 Uhr = "vierzehn Uhr dreißig". Colloquially: halb drei (14:30).
Minutes "nach" and "vor"
- 3:10 → zehn nach drei (ten past three)
- 3:50 → zehn vor vier (ten to four)
Common mistakes
- ❌ halb vier = 4:30 → ✅ "halb vier" = 3:30 (German counts towards the next full hour).
- ❌ Es ist Viertel nach vier for 3:45 → ✅ Viertel vor vier.
