German A1 · Personal Pronouns & Present Tense

Regelmäßige Verben im Präsens – A1 German Grammar

Regular verbs in the present tense

You form regular verbs from stem + ending. The stem of "spielen" (to play) is spiel-.

PersonEndingForm
ich-espiele
du-stspielst
er/sie/es-tspielt
wir-enspielen
ihr-tspielt
sie/Sie-enspielen

Example: Ich spiele Fußball. (I play football.) Wir lernen Deutsch. (We learn German.)

Verbs with a stem in -t/-d

If the stem ends in -t or -d (arbeit-, find-), you insert an -e- for du/er/ihr: du arbeitest, er arbeitet, ihr arbeitet.

Present = also future

The present tense describes the present and often the future: Morgen spiele ich Fußball. (Tomorrow I'll play football.)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Ich spielen → ✅ Ich spiele.
  • ❌ Du arbeitst → ✅ Du arbeitest (stem ends in -t).
  • ❌ Er spielen → ✅ Er spielt.

Du ___ (spielen) Fußball.
