German B2 · Reported Speech & Formal Style

Nominalstil vs. Verbalstil – B2 German Grammar

Nominal style vs. verbal style

The same content can be expressed verbally (with a clause + verb) or nominally (with a noun + preposition). The nominal style is more compact and typical of formal texts.

Verbal style (verb/clause)Nominal style (noun)
nachdem die Unterlagen überprüft wurdennach der Überprüfung der Unterlagen
als er ankambei seiner Ankunft
weil die Preise steigenwegen der steigenden Preise

Note:

  • Nominal style: preposition + (article) + noun, often with the genitive.
  • Verbal style is easier to read, nominal style denser/more official.
  • Exam tasks often ask you to transform in both directions.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Nach überprüfen der Unterlagen → ✅ Nach der Überprüfung der Unterlagen (a noun, not the infinitive).
  • ❌ wrong case: wegen die steigenden Preise → ✅ wegen der steigenden Preise (genitive).

Examples:

  • Nach der Prüfung der Anträge folgt eine Entscheidung. (After the review of the applications, a decision follows.)
  • Bei Regen fällt die Veranstaltung aus. (In case of rain the event is cancelled.)
  • Trotz der Verspätung erreichten wir den Anschluss. (Despite the delay we caught the connection.)
